London Bridge

Anil C Menon's London Bridge, set against the backdrop of London City, is a triangular romantic drama revolving around the lives of a guy and two girls influencing his lavish life. Story Vijay Das (Prithviraj Sukumaran) is a successful businessman running some corner shops and a money lending enterprise in East London. He has come to London after his college life and suffered a lot there to finally get into a big position. One day, Vijay gets to a clash with a man who has borrowed some money from his enterprise and didn't pay back the same. On the course, Vijay gets to know the man is much liked and respected by CS Nambiar (Prathap Pothen), a business tycoon well known in London who is capable of anything in the city. Vijay seeks the help of Advocate Francis (Mukesh) who was the main factor to help in almost all his tough situations which is followed by a meeting with Nambiar and Vijay.

Nambiar, getting to know the history of Vijay, is much pleased with his nature and asks him to marry his daughter Pavithra (Andrea Jeremiah), who is keenly interested in charity works. Things take a turn when Vijay's car hits Merin (Nanditha Raj) on the way back from his first meeting with Pavithra. Merin is new to the city and is just about to enter her first job as a nurse. In the accident, Merin's one hand gets paralysed. On his further meetings with Merin at the hospital, mainly to impress Pavithra, Vijay gets more attached with Merin and develops a deep bond of love. In the meantime, Pavithra too falls in love with Vijay who is impressed with his helping attitude and agrees to her father to marry Vijay. Vijay, finding himself between the love of these two ladies, have to find an answer to choose one in his life. Performances Prithviraj as Vijay Das is impressive with his stunning looks and controlled acting. Andrea Jeremiah in her role of Pavithra too has given out a decent performance. Nanditha Raj looks cute with her role as Merin, but leaves a big challenge of improving her expressions while rendering dialogues. Other actors including Prathap Pothen (CS Nambiar), Lena (Gracy), Sunil Sukhada (Thambikutty), Mukesh (Francis) have done justice to their roles. Technical Aspects Cinematography by Jithu Damodar is impressive. He has captured the stunning locations of the city of London with much brilliance. Camera angles too are exceptional. Another saving grace of the movie is the music. BGM by Gopi Sunder is pleasing throughout. 'Ennum ninne...' and 'Kannadivathil...' are impressive, while the other two doesn't make an impact. ADVERTISEMENT Jinu Abraham, who has penned the script and dialogues, could have worked on it much more as the movie stays as just one in the line of several romantic dramas we have come across. He hasn't tried much to create a difference which could have made a better impact on the audience. On the direction side, Anil C Menon has improved a bit from his previous flicks, still fails at times to impress. For the kind of its genre, length of the movie is a main factor and the movie could have been trimmed well for better acceptance.

Balyakalasakhi

Pramod Payyannur's Balyakalasakhi, the cinematic adaptation of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer's well known novel of the same name, with ADVERTISEMENT Mammootty and Isha Talwar in the lead is a near excellent adaptation of the novel backed with some wonderful performances.

Story Balyakalasakhi is a pure love story revolving around Majeed (Mammootty) and Suhra (Isha Talwar) which begins from their childhood. The movie begins with Majeed searching a job in Kolkata. He loses his money and bag on the way, but is helped by Selvi (Seema Biswas) , who introduces him to Ameen Sahib (Sasikumar). Ameen Sahib gives Majeed a job in his press. Majeed meets Shabnam (Thanusree Ghosh) , daughter of Ameen Sahib and Praful (Preim Sheikh), a rebel and a writer. Rest of the story deals with the flashback of the love story between Majeed and Suhra and how and where life takes them.

Performances Mammootty, in his double role of Majeed and his father is the pick among many. He has enacted the character of Majeed to near perfection. Isha Talwar as Suhra has improved much from her earlier films and has come out good. Rest of the cast including Seema Biswas, Sasikumar, Thanusree Ghosh, Meena (Majeed's mother), Preim Sheikh, Sunil Sukhada (Avaraan), Kavitha Nair (Suhra's mom), Mamukkoya (Narayana Pilla) have done full justice to their roles. Also special mention goes to Parambrata Chatterjee and other young and child artists. Technical Aspects Cinematography by Hari Nair is near flawless. He has captured the scenic beauty of the village and the streets of Kolkata with much brilliance. Music by the late legend Raghavan Master and Shahabaz Aman is a treat for music lovers. All songs, especially Thamarapponkavanathil and Kalam Parakkanu are sure to live long in the mind of music lovers. For the cinematic version, Pramod Payyannur have done a lot of compromise. The first half which leaves us spellbound doesn't have that charm in the second half. Though the movie was said to be for 120 minutes, it has further been cut short. Editing also seems bit faltered as many sequences have been unexpectedly cut short. Still, Pramod Payyannur can be proud of making such a good movie of such a heart warming love story written by a legend.

Om Shanti Oshana

Debutant director Jude Anthony Joseph's Om Shanthi Oshana, as claimed to be, is a pure love story without any gimmicks, told from the girl's perspective.

Story Pooja Mathew (Nazriya Nazim), daughter of Mathew Davis (Renji Panicker) and Annie, is a naughty school girl. She has her best friends at her school Neethu (Akshaya), a flirt and Dona (Oshein Mertil), a junk foodie.

One day on her routine visit to Rachel Aunt (Vinayaprasad), Pooja comes to know the good side of a love marriage and decides to find a guy for her life. Firstly, she turns to a best figured guy at her school, Yardley, who is well known to all. Later, on a visit to a water theme park, Pooja meets Giri (Nivin Pauly), a graduate, who is into farming and social activities at her village. Pooja falls in love with Giri and believes him to be the man for her life. On Giri's birthday, Pooja tries to confess her love for him, but Giri turns it down telling her to be a small girl and advices her to concentrate on her studies. Later, after her successful completion of school studies and entrance test, Pooja gets admission in Calicut Medical College. She reaches Giri's home to bid bye, but comes to know from Giri's mother Sumitra, that Giri is on a visit to the Shaolin Temple at China for his Kung fu studies. With much pain, she leaves to Calicut for her studies where she meets Dr Prasad Varkey (Vineeth Sreenivasan), her young and enthusiastic teacher and very soon they become good friends. On her last year of studies, she meets Giri again at her college. Will she be successful to gain Giri's love now? Rest of the plot gives your answer. Performances Nazriya Nazim as Pooja Mathew has given out a decent performance. Some of her expressions are worth it. Nivin Pauly as Giri has also portrayed his character well. Aju Varghese as David Kanjani, cousin brother of Pooja, is yet another good one which is sure to make you smile. Vineeth Sreenivasan as Dr Prasad Varkey, Renji Panicker as Mathew have also done a wonderful job. Rest of the actors including Akshaya, Lal Jose (Jacob Tharakan), Vinaya Prasad, Nikki Galrani have also done well in their small yet good roles. Technical Aspects Cinematography by Vinod Illampally is not an out of the world thing, but has some charm in it. Music by Shaan Rehman is pleasing. All the songs are well placed and BGM of the movie is soothing and energetic. Director himself, Midhun Manuel Thomas behind the script and screenplay of the movie have managed to give out a movie worth watching. Though the story is told from the female side, it has a lot of cliche stuff and it doesn't boast of any surprise elements and goes in a narrow linear way where we can easily predict what will happen next. Also, the makers of the movie could have trimmed the second half which did lag at parts.

Salaam Kashmir - Movie Review

Veteran director Joshiy's multi-starrer Salaam Kashmir with Jayaram, Suresh Gopi in the lead is one of the best crap movies released in recent times. The movie set against the backdrop of Kerala and Kashmir is a military family thriller which fails to thrill at even a single point.

Story Sreekumar (Jayaram) is a house husband living happily with his wife Suja (Mia George) and their daughter Sreekutty. Suja is working in a bank and earns for their living while Sreekumar does the daily works in home including cooking, washing clothes and every other. Suja alias Leena, daughter of Jacob (Vijayaraghavan, a famous planter at Kanjirappally, fell in love with Sreekumar and has married him without the consent of her parents. Sreekumar doubts Suja of having an affair with Tommy Eapen Devassy (Suresh Gopi), a lieutenant colonel and a family friend of Jacob who had proposed her earlier. One day, Tommy drops Suja at their home in his car, which causes Sreekumar to shout at her and following this Suja drops her job at bank. With none earning, Suja finds hard to move on with Sreekumar and leaves to her home with her daughter. Sreekumar is helped by Roy (Lalu Alex) who arranges him a security job at a bar. On a day, Roy comes to know from Tommy, that Sreekumar was a military officer in command of the cyber wing in Kashmir, who was on a mission to create a software that could hack the cyber wing of the terrorists. Following an attack from terrorists on Sreekumar and his wife, they had fled Kashmir to have a safe and happy life. Now Tommy wants Sreekumar to complete the mission and secure the nation from terrorist threats. Will Sreekumar take up this half done mission? Will they succeed with their mission? Answer forms rest of the story.

Performances None of the lead actors were impressive, be it Jayaram in the role of Sreekumar, trying to create some laughs in the first half with some double meaning jokes, or Suresh Gopi as Tommy Eapen Devassy, a flirt army officer with a dialect of Kanjirappally Achayan's who comes up with some english dialogues at times to make us believe it's a military movie. Mia George as Suja/Leena had nothing special to perform but have done justice to her role. Other actors including Krishnakumar (Satheesh), Vijayaraghavan, Lalu Alex, Krishnaprabha, Sreekumar (Vinu) are ok with their roles. Technical Aspects Cinematography by Manoj Pillai is the main positive thing about the movie. He has well framed the scenic beauty of Kashmir. M Jayachandran's music fails to impress as two songs in the movie fells flat without any impact. The other positive thing apart from Cinematography is the BGM, which is good at parts. Putting aside these positives, there is nothing much commendable for the movie. Be it the poor screenplay and dialogues by Sethu, or the surprising amateurish direction by the veteran director, everything fails to impress the viewers. Verdict Can you imagine such a movie, which has scenes where the national cyber security wing's computer while hacking uses words 'Scanning' 'Decoding' etc.. ? What was all those? A mocking to the cyber security wing or just mistakes coming out of a movie? I just can come up with a conclusion which is copied from the character Kottayam Kunjachan.. 'Joshiy has cheated us'.

From 'Noah' to 'Son of God,' 2014 Is Jam-Packed With Bible-Based Movies

Exactly a month before Noah and his ark arrive, another Bible-based movie is hitting the big screen, and this one already has earned the stamp of approval from religious leaders.
Son of God (Feb. 28, Fox) features a mix of new and used footage from History's hit miniseries The Bible -- which averaged 11.4 million viewers during its five-week run and became the top-selling miniseries on DVD of all time -- to tell the story of Jesus Christ. Husband-and-wife producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey involved key Christian figures in the production, including evangelical pastor Rick Warren and Rev. Sam Rodriguez, president of the Hispanic Evangelical Alliance.

"We took this very seriously, so we involved all of these advisers from the very, very beginning," says Burnett of the film, which stars Diogo Morgado as Christ. Son of God already is being added to the curriculums of at least three Christian and Catholic programs in the U.S. And Burnett, the reality TV mogul behind Survivor and The Apprentice, appeared with Downey at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., on Feb. 6 to preview 30 minutes of footage and pass out posters.
Fox has another Bible-based movie coming Dec. 12. Exodus, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Christian Bale as Moses, follows the Israelites' journey out of Egypt. Details are scarce on the Chernin Entertainment and Scott Free Productions-produced project, but sources tell THR that Scott, an avowed agnostic, has chosen an unconventional depiction of God in the film. If so, it faces the same challenge in wooing religious audiences as Noah does.
"From what we know of the film, the creative decisions made will be satisfying to Aronofsky fans," says Mark Joseph, who has marketed faith-based movies. "The open question is whether they'll be satisfying to fans of Noah and the Bible."
